NOTES
OF A BIBLE READING.
GIVEN BY REV. GEO. B. PECK.
We might place
disease between sin and death.
Sin is the
occasion of all disease. The blindness of the man spoken of in John ix: 1-3,
though not the result of his sin, was the result of sin, as sin was in
the world.
Origin of sin and
disease, Rom. V: 12; I John iii: 8; Lu. xiii: 16. Here disease as well as sin
is directly attributed to Satan, and if so then why are not diseases of
the devil now?
Christ came to
destroy the works of the devil. I John iii: 8.. He destroyed the work of the
devil when He loosed the woman.
Christ came into
the world intending to save from both sins and sickness. Matt. i: 21; Is. liii:
5,6, 11; Matt. viii: 17; I Pet. ii: 24; Matt. xi: 4, 5. Matt viii: 17 is the
Holy Spirit’s comment on His own writing in Ix. liii: 5, 6, 11.
Christ was a
double Saviour when on earth. Matt. ix: 2-7; John v: 14.. (Shows his disease
was occasioned by sin.)
Christ wrought
out a double redemption on the cross. Rom. iv: 25; Rom. viii: 10, 11. The
Spirit in us is the power that overcomes disease.
Christ healed
after His ascension. Acts iii: 6-16. Some say if they could only see
Christ they could believe better, but it was His divinity, not His
humanity, by which he healed.
Mark xvi: 8; Acts
xxviii: 8’ James v: 14, 15, 16. Oil is the emblem of the Holy Spirit, and
anointing with oil is an appeal to the Holy Spirit to exert His own energy upon
the person; and anointing “in the names of the Lord,” if there is faith,
renders the appeal successful. Accompanied with prayer, it is a mode of solemn
consecration to the Lord for healing, and a separation from all other means of
help.
“In the name of
the Lord.” Lord means Master, Monarch, One with all Power. Anointing with oil
in the name of the Lord is a separating unto the Lord, putting into His hands
as the Physician to follow His directions, and it says nothing about medicine
in the prescription; and when we follow the Lord’s prescription of the
responsibility is all His and not ours.
